Long haul home By Celeste Lodewyk Truck driver Aurora Blackmore-Adair has left behind the long and dusty roads of Western Australia to return to New Zealand. She is currently driving in Auckland but plans to return to Marlborough where she will be travelling on a 800km route from Picton to Christchurch and back. Returning home has been a huge relief for the nearly 24-year-old who says she is surprised more women aren’t truck driving.

Relieved to be home Continued from page 1 “I wish more women and younger people were truck driving, it’s actually a really great industry to be in. “Some days are hilarious. When I am in and out of yards and on the road people do a double take when they see me driving. “It’s surprising how many people have looked at me and didn’t think I could do this job. I might have the best nails of all truckies in NZ, but I’m a good driver too,” she laughs. Aurora arrived home in June and spent time with family and her horses in Marlborough while deciding what to do next. “I had forgotten what being happy and having friends was about. My work load was huge in Australia and I got stuck in a routine of work and sleep with no downtime.
“NZ started to seem like it was so far away and I was missing my family and friends. “So I sold everything, packed my life into three suitcases and came home,” she says. Aurora received a glowing reference from the haulage company she worked for which she says really helped her find work in NZ. Now she is working for company Fitchett Linehaul in Auckland working a 12 hour shift driving a variety of trucks including Scanias, Mercedes and an International which she loves for it’s horse power. “But overall my favourite is the new 700 Volvo, it’s so roomy and powerful.” “For the first time in years I am smiling in my job and I haven’t had that before. Black Stick Anita returns to ‘second home’ By Jacob Page Black Sticks New Zealand hockey player Anita Punt spent a fair chunk of her time playing in Blenheim but this weekend’s games against Argentina will easily top them. Having grown up in Nelson, Anita regularly played games in Blenheim both at club and representative age-group level. Now with more than 200 international caps to her name, she will return as College Park plays host to the first game of top level hockey in Blenheim since 1958. “We had two clubs from Blenheim that played in the Nelson competition and I was on the opposition teams that went over the hill and played in Marlborough so it’ll be like playing in a second home,” she says. Anita says the matches against the South American side will be another step toward the Rio Olympics next year, where the team will look to atone for their frustrating fourth in London in 2012. “These games will be a great chance for us to gel some new players into the setup which is always exciting. Argentina are ranked third in the world, with the Kiwis sitting in fourth position. Both have qualified for the Games in Brazil. “It’s hard not to think about Rio but I’m trying to focus on small goals,” she says. “It’s this series and then it’s Oceania Championships.” As well as some new blood, Anita will welcome back close friend Charlotte Harrison, who has been out of favour for three

Marlborough wine export boost Marlborough wine exporters will find it easier to get into the South Korean market after a bill was passed that brings the elimination of tariffs a step closer. The Trade Amendment Bill is part of the implementation of a free trade agreement with South Korea that was made in March this year. Under the agreement, tariffs on New Zealand wine will be eliminated, but that will not happen until some amendments are made to New Zealand and South Korean laws.

Anita says she will continue to do some sprint meets this season but they will be few and far between as she chooses to focus her
energy on hockey. “The sprinting is a different kind of fitness but clearly my hockey helps in some ways. “I’ll continue to do some training with my partner and see how the season goes.” She says many of the senior players know they have the ability to be gold medal contenders however, failures at sudden death penalty strokes had cost them in
big games. “We definitely feel like we can compete… “It’s fair to say we have struggled with the shoot outs,” she says. “I’m not sure why that is as we feel confident going in to them… My theory is let’s just win and avoid them all together.” The matches will be played at College Park tomorrow and Sunday with both games starting at 2pm.
Renwick will host next year’s National Scout Jamboree, which will boost the town’s population dramatically in late December. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman signed an agreement with Scouts New Zealand confirming the 10-day gathering in Renwick from December 29.

Garden tours The St Andrews Presbyterian Church are running their ‘Around the Garden Tour’ on October 9 and 10. Tickets are $15 and are available at Springlands, Roselands and Selmes Trust Garden Centres and Cresswell’s Shoes. The Awatere Community Centre and Picton’s Take Note will also have ticket sales.
Work is underway on the upgrade of Bythell Place as the first stage in the upgrade of Blenheim’s central business district. The removal of the raised grass areas on the west side of Bythell Place began on Wednesday. Council approved the project after input from the Blenheim Business Association and Marlborough Roads. A spokesman for the Business Association Michael Fitzpatrick says it’s exciting to see Council and business community working together to make the improvements. “We’re aiming to raise the quality of the streetscape and create a family-friendly vibe – which should benefit the town’s businesses by encouraging people to enjoy their town,” said Mr Fitzpatrick. The Marlborough District Council has committed to upgrade infrastructure and public spaces in the town centre over the next two years.
Wine Festival tickets on sale Early bird tickets are now on sale for the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival. The event will be held on February 13. Ladi6 has already been announced as one of the musical acts for the day.
Wine destinations take flight Sounds Air look set to put on flights to other wine destinations in New Zealand from November. Sounds Air will start flying between Blenheim and Napier from November 5 with an emphasis on lower prices and a faster journey for passengers.

The store was awarded the Top Shop Award for 2015, topping all of New Zealand’s stores within the chain, for the second year in a row. Manager Corinne Hanson attended the conference and awards event last week and says while she was hoping for a win, it still came as a surprise. “It was incredible to win again. Our goal was always to win two years in a row, now that’s achieved we want to win again next year,” she says. The awards were based on a number of criteria including staff training and education, compliance with Health 2000 policies, magazine distribution and sales. “We just want to say a huge thank you to all our customers for supporting us in the three years we have been here,” she says.

Although the existing grass is being removed, retailers’ wish to see a grassed area incorporated into the redesign has been acknowledged; the water fountains will be removed and one large grassed area established. Planted areas will soften the Maxwell Road corners and a wide, level tiled area will connect one side of Bythell Place with the other. Five parking spaces will be removed to develop the area into safer, more easily accessible area. While the minor work is underway now, the bulk of the work will not begin until after this summer to avoid disruption during the CBD’s busiest season.

Lighting up Picton Picton’s foreshore was bathed in light for the first time when Picton Councillor David Oddie gave the word to flick on the switch for the foreshore’s new lighting system last week. The lighting project was approved by Council to improve safety on the foreshore and to make it easier for ferry passengers walking from the terminal into the town in the evening. The lighting will mark out a pedestrian path from the aquarium to the foreshore steps, at the same time up-lighting the palm trees and war memorial.
Council amenities officer Nic Crous says the $240,000 project had a few challenges along the way. “We had to think about such things as preventing the glare on the water, finding products that were power-saving and durable, and find the right designs to deal with all the different locations from the walkway itself to the war memorial steps.” “Because much of the foreshore was originally a very low-lying area which has been filled in over the years, it wasn’t the easiest place to be putting in trenches and the weather
didn’t always help. But the contractors have done a great job.” It’s also been an opportunity for Network Tasman to install fibre
optic cabling through the foreshore via the underground trenching required for the lighting project.
Thanks for the bus shelter Passengers waiting in Springlands for the Blenheim Bus have a sheltered seat thanks to the generosity of Blenheim’s 41 Club. The shelter is directly outside Ashwood Park Retirement Village and the retirement home owners have allowed the shelter to be sited inside their boundary so there’s still good footpath access. As the Blenheim Bus has

Marlborough is in one of the more seismically active areas of New Zealand and is home to the major set of faults known as the Marlborough Fault System. This system is the northward extension of the Alpine Fault. The Alpine Fault is a significant fault with potential for generating a ‘great earthquake’ of Richter Magnitude 8 or greater. Scientists say there is a significant possibility that the Alpine Fault will rupture in the next 50 to 100 years. The Marlborough Fault System is estimated to have the potential for events up to a magnitude of 7 to 7.8 on the Richter scale. All Marlborough settlements
are located close to the Alpine Fault or to other active faults. Most, if not all, settlements are also at risk from hazards associated with large magnitude earthquakes, including

But no one knows what’s ahead and this is a chance for us to underline how important it is for everyone to know how to respond to a big quake.” About 12,000 local people including 45 local businesses took part in the first national ShakeOut exercise in 2012. New Zealand Shakeout is part of a global earthquake drill, the International Shakeout Day of Action, October 15.

Inconsiderate jet boaters To the two very inconsiderate jet boaters on the Wairau River on Sunday morning 27th September, you had no respect what so ever for all the rowers who were terrifed by your actions. I was a spectator and feared for their saftey. Do you not know you are only allowed to do five knots in this area. We can all live without you on this awesome river.
Communication I was struck by the distinct lack of cell engagement by patrons at a fund raising charity dinner last night! No phones on tables, no one checking phones slyly, just focussed attention on the people in the room and the cause! Maybe some of us still remember face to face communication.

Festival back for another successful year By Celeste Lodewyk If you love fun and spring, you will love the Wairau Youth and Family Trust Spring Festival that is being held in Blenheim on October 10 at the St Ninian’s Hall from 9am - 1pm. This event follows last year’s highly successful festival which saw Riley Crescent closed off and a number of stalls set up. It will be the same again this year, but with some new and exciting additions, says Trust fundraising committee member Trish Robertson. “It will be a really great family day. We are encouraging people to bring along their families and come down for brunch or lunch. “There will be food stalls, whitebait

and hot chips and a big barbeque as well as Mr Whippy and a cafe serving Devonshire tea,” she says. A Christmas shop will be set up with everything from decorations to gift ideas, while for the children there will be bouncy castles, face painting, ‘pot the shot’, performances by Star Dance and games. Proceeds from the festival will be coming towards the Trust’s employment of a community children’s worker, a Christian education programme and children’s holiday programmes. Sunday Skate Jam By Celeste Lodewyk Take your scooters and skateboards along to the Blenheim Skate Park this Sunday for a fun supervised event. Orgnaniser Bec Moorehouse says there will be music sound system set up by Duncan McKenzie to entertain the crowd, while a coffee cart and sausage sizzle will be available for refreshments. The most exciting part of the event is a new feature introduced by Bec, a number of professionally made ramps to be used for skateboards and scooters. Bec purchased the ramps for the purpose of the regular Skate Jam sessions, and for larger events she plans to organise in the near future. As the popularity of the Skate Jam events grow, Bec is looking to form a small committee to help with fundraising and event co-ordinating, so anyone interested is encouraged to contact her via the Scoot Skate & Ride Marlborough Facebook page or see her on Sunday. “My next project is to fundraise to purchase helmets, scooters and skateboards so children who don’t have any can use them at events and join in the fun. “Plus I have a couple of bigger projects coming up and need some help organising them, so I would love to hear from anyone willing to help out,” she says. Sunday’s Skate Jam will run from 11am - 1:30pm. If it’s raining the event will be postponed and held the following Sunday. Blenheim extends lead in sunshine race By Jacob Page Blenheim has increased its lead as the sunniest town in New Zealand for 2015 despite a colder than usual September. Despite a soggy finish to the end of the month, Blenheim still had plenty of sunshine. According to the Blenheim Meteorological Station located at the Grovetown Park campus of the Marlborough Research Centre, Blenheim had 225.3 hours sunshine for September which was 33 hours more than the historical average. Blenheim has extended its lead on Whakatane as New Zealand’s sunniest spot during September by a further 16 hours, to now be 33.4 hours ahead. The average daily maximum temperature for the month was 14.7 degrees Celsius which was 1.6 below average. The average daily minimum temperature was 4.8°C; 1.2°C
below average. Liaison scientist Rob Agnew says September was much colder than anything on recent record “September 2015 was much cooler than in any of the previous 17 years (1998-2014). “We have to go back to September 1997 to find a cooler monthly mean temperature.” Rainfall total of 54.4mm was just above the average of 51mm.

The
Beef + Lamb New Zealand is calling on sheep and beef farmers to rise to the Farmstrong Cycle Challenge and get some kilometres under their belts. The organisation is encouraging farmers to either get on their bicycles or don their walking or running shoes to benefit both their mental and physical health and to help the Farmstrong Cycle Challenge achieve its target by the end of May 2016. Supported by the Mental Health Foundation, the challenge is designed to give farmers the skills and resources to live well, farm well and get the most out of life. Farmstrong hopes Kiwi farmers will commit to collectively covering the four million kilometres set in the Cycle Challenge target. This equates to every farmer and grower biking, running or walking a total of 70km at any time before the May 2016 deadline. So far, farmers have pledged 385,974 kms, with 52,310 kms travelled. Beef + Lamb New Zealand chief executive, Scott Champion says B+LNZ is pleased to be able to support the campaign. “Mental and physical health are really important issues for our farmers and rural communities and for their resilience in tough times.” In March 2016 the inaugural Farmstrong Fit4Farming cycle tour will travel the length of the country to raise awareness about the
importance of keeping fit on the farm. Farmers will be encouraged to join events being held en-route.
Farmers can pledge to the challenge on the Farmstrong website www.farmstrong.co.nz and log their activity.

Stop fly at docks The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) will work closely with the cruise ship industry this season to manage biosecurity risk, especially fruit fly. The cruise sector is expecting a record season, with passenger numbers forecast to jump 33% to 267,800. “This, coupled with the enhanced fruit fly threat across the Tasman and other parts of the Pacific, has brought MPI and the cruise industry together to improve biosecurity,” says Stephanie Rowe, MPI’s Head of Intelligence and Operations. “We’ve done a lot of work with the cruise ship industry to identify which vessels we want to target, based on their history, where
they are coming from and who the passengers are.” One of the areas of focus will be working with cruise ship companies to ensure vessels carry stores that don’t a pose biosecurity risk, she says. “Fruit fly host items, like apples and bananas, account for more than 75 percent of the biosecurity risk items our officers seize from cruise ship passengers coming ashore.” “If we know this food doesn’t pose any biosecurity risk because it has been sourced from New Zealand or from a reputable supplier, we can actually reduce the amount of intervention by our quarantine officers,” she says.

Government accused of ignoring crisis Farmer horrified at refusal to help with Silver Fern Farms ‘issues’ The government has been accused of lacking priorities and of ignoring a crisis with the meat industry. Dave McGaveston, Tapawera farmer and Alliance meat company shareholder, is horrified at government’s refusal to get involved in the issues around the Chinese take-over of Silver Fern Farms (SFF). “With Finance minister Bill English and Primary Industry Minister Nathan Guy saying it’s up to the shareholders, it’s an absolute cop-out,” he said.
Dave McGaveston said government was not showing any leadership and at a critical time for the meat industry’s future. “In contrast, the Chinese government will invest serious money in their red meat supply chain through Shanghai Maling, the Chinese equivalent of an SOE, whereas our government refuses to contribute a paltry $300,000 to enable the NEWCO proposition.” He cited millions of dollars being spent on the flag referendum, suspect Saudi Arabian farming ventures, purchasing pandas and
propping up Kiwi Rail as examples of government’s misplaced priorities. “It seems government is unconcerned about the meat industry, our second largest export earner’s future,” said Dave MCGaveston. He admitted to being “very nervous” at the effects of a cashed-up Silver Fern Farms with excess capacity and that other meat companies must be nervous, with the likelihood of a procurement war. “The National government - once the farmers’ friend - has now turned its back on
this sector and is being actively obstructive as shown by its refusal to support the New Zealand First party’s Meat Industry Restructuring Bill.” As a consequence the bill was forced into the parliamentary ballot process where it became superseded by the National initiated debate on the flag. Instead and sensibly the bill should have been rushed through under urgency and not suffered the fate it did said Dave McGaveston.
Rates club rebrand This year marks the tenth anniversary of the formation of Federated Farmers $10k Rates Club – an informal grouping of members who share the unwelcome bond of payment more than $10,000 a year in general rates. “The club has been a way for us to capture stories, gauge the trends in general rates and add another string to our lobbying bow,” says Senior Policy Advisor Nigel Billings. The club remains strong but times have changed – and, as Nigel admits, it might be time for a rebrand. “Unfortunately, $10,000 rates notices are not as rare as they used to be for those in our rural communities. We’re thinking we might need to change the name to the $15k Rates Club. It may even need to be $20k.” “It’s our very firm belief that property owners shouldn’t bear the cost of community services alone, and local government should be funded by a share of GST revenue.” To help Federated Farmers make this important decision - $10k, $15k or $20K? – you can help us gauge the latest trends by joining the club yourself. Art and craft on show by preschoolers Pelorus community Preschool will hold their third Art and Craft Expo on Sunday October 11. This is a community event where the amazing art work the children have worked on over the year is displayed to the public. Teacher Aleeze Toombs says the event is an important part of life at the preschool. “An integral part of the philosophy at Pelorus Community Preschool is that art and craft is a key element of the learning programme. “Exploring a variety of craft mediums encourages children to scaffold learning in many areas, not just their imagination”. This year the children have produced work which includes pottery, weaving, sculpture using recycled materials, felting, tiling and paint. Each collection of art is accompanied by photos and a story of inspiration and production; together with a teacher review of what learning has taken place. At the same time as viewing the children’s work we have invited local art and crafts to sell their produce. These

Laser tag finds home patch By Jacob Page Laser tag looks set to be a regular fixture in Blenheim over the summer with a pop-up business set to take over the Vines Village. Nelson Pro Karts and Laser Tag will use a 1000m squared field to run the operation in association with Vines Village. The debut will be on Tuesday October 6 and then Saturday October 10. Owner Nick Fowler says while there are dates scheduled for November and December they would be using the month of October to see how much interest there is.

Countdown makes progress The new Countdown supermarket in Redwoodtown continues to take shape with more of the walls up standing. The new supermarket will create an extra 60 jobs with the current Countdown premises to be converted into retail shops.
Blenheim company Redwood Development Ltd, which owns the Redwood Tavern, are in charge of building the 3500-square metre building at the corner of Weld St and Alabama Rd. It is hoped the new Countdown will be open by March 2016.

The NRL judiciary circus Once again the NRL judiciary has proven how much of a circus it is. Brisbane Broncos captain Justin Hodges should be suspended for the NRL final against the North Queensland Cowboys this Sunday. Take the emotion out of it, which the judiciary has failed to do it seems, and his part in a dangerous tackle last weekend deserved a one week ban. However, it seems because he’s been a champion player who is playing his last game in an allQueensland final, it seems the romance of the occasion got the better of common sense. Conspiracy theorists will argue that if it were a Kiwi player or a Warriors player, they would have
been suspended. Heck, it has happened to Isaac Luke when he was playing for the South Sydney Rabbitohs. It’s understandable that the competition wants its best players on the park for their pinnacle match; however, the NRL judiciary has been an inconsistent joke for years. Too many times Kiwi players have been suspended on the eve of an Anzac Test. It’s time the NRL looked at using the sin bin more. At times, it looks like you have to kill a person before you get sent off. While rugby hands out too many yellow cards, it seems rugby league don’t do it enough. Too often a player stays on the

field and gets a later suspension. That offers no advantage to the team the penalty was awarded to and gives more power to next week’s opponents. Either way, it should be a great final. I got on the Cowboys with a sneaky bet after they lost to the Broncos in week one of the finals. They may have timed their run to perfection and while Brisbane will play with emotion for their departing skipper, you can bet the Cowboys will be doing all they can to ensure Johnathan Thurston gets an elusive NRL title with the franchise he is the face of. And to cement his legacy as one of the greatest players of all time.

Kennard key in ‘rally of corners’ By Jacob Page Hayden Paddon and Blenheim’s John Kennard face new challenges at this week’s FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) event on the French island of Corsica. Dubbed the ‘rally of 10,000 corners’, Tour de Corse is renowned for its tight, twisty mountain roads and never-ending sequences of turns. The 1-4 October event sees the French WRC round return to the island after seven years of absence from the Alsace location where Paddon and Kennard have competed twice previously. Fresh from their fourth top-five finish of the season in Australia, Paddon has been preparing for the French event with an intensive schedule of testing with the Hyundai Motorsport team and additional coaching to improve the specialised skills he needs to be more competitive on tarmac rallies. “It will be a very challenging rally,” Paddon said while en route to Corsica. “It’s no exaggeration to call it the rally of 10,000 corners; it’s a very twisty, non-stop rally made

New paddles, top results By Jacob Page The Simply The Breast rowing team decided to mix things up at the South Island Masters Games in Nelson. They took part in the novice division of Waka Ama. The team made up of breast cancer survivors took part in the 500 metre sprint, the 2½ km and the 5 km races. Team STB was placed second and team STB1 was placed third overall picking up the silver and bronze medals. Team member Wendie Partner says with a new season of paddling getting underway they were keen to Julie Ham, Wendie Partner, Margaret Hockey and Jude Goodall from Simply The Breast 1 recruit more women. “Ideally, we want to recruit course, however we are keen ested in the sport to join us as breast cancer survivors of to invite ladies who are inter- support paddlers,” she says.

Paddon and Kennard are noted for their ability to quickly pick up new stages, being used to New Zealand’s one pass reconnaissance for making pace notes. “This ability will help to some extent. As this event has not been on the WRC calendar for quite some time, the majority of the route is new for everyone. This event will certainly be the most crucial of the year for the role of the co-driver and pace notes. With so many corners and long stages, it’s impossible to remember the stages as we can sometimes on events we have done before, so it’s a matter of writing really good notes during recce, then trusting and driving to them 100 per cent in the rally.” Paddon’s aims are to try and show some improvement throughout the rally. “My goal is to learn as much as we can and improve my tarmac driving technique. We’ll try and bring home a top ten finish. There are a lot of tarmac specialists here for this event, with 17 WRC entries in total, so the competition will be hotter than ever.”
